UPDATE: Found two more references for the term, "remnant", both in the same chapter (Ezra 9). These are quite intriguing, and I don't understand why my Strong's Concordance didn't list them. I found them when I was looking at references for another term, "mingling".  "Mingling" in the scriptures, refers to mixing.  In this case, as in many others, it means the mixing of 'holy' (or 'good') "seed" (seed being a reproductive term here) with that which is unholy or evil.  Israel (repeatedly described in scriptures as God's people) is forbidden to "mingle" with the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Ammonites, Moabites, etc. -- anyone of the 'serpent's seed'.

I also found another quite interesting verse, in Jeremiah 31:27 -- "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast."

I've often said, that the "beast" in Revelation prophecy is refering to a Hybrid species of Human beings.  It's logical, since only Human beings are made "in God's image".  Bestiality is strictly forbidden in scriptures, but the Canaanites practiced it along with all the other abominations they were so fond of.

Jews often point out that Israel was taken captive by the Assyrians (always blaming the Israelis for that "punishment" by God), but they never admit that Judea was allied to the Assyrians, and that they in fact made war on their brothers, Israel, and sold their war prisoners into Assyrian slavery.

Hezekiah the king of Judea nearly had a nervous breakdown, because the Assyrians to whom he was allied politically, sought to destroy Judea, and to take it for themselves to rule.

The king sent for Isaiah (I believe it was him) for advice and intercession with Isaiah's God (which was obviously not the same one as Hezekiah's god).  Only by following Isaiah's advice, and praying to the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, was Judah spared from ownership by the Assyrians.

In Titus (New Testament), it is clearly expressed what liars the Jews were in those times. And I believe that the same sentiment holds unfortunately true of most of their leadership even today.

And while Israel did mingle with and pick up bad habits (both spiritual and material) from their captors / persecutors (Assyria), the bible is clear that God does forgive Israel when they realize and repent from their sins.  He stated that He would form a "new covenant" with them -- and He did.
